A graceful debut from Monvigliero, Voerzio Martinis 2018 Barolo feels simultaneously delicate and profound. The aromatics rise gently, revealing bright red fruit and spice layers that impress with elegance rather than force.
Sourced from the celebrated Monvigliero cru in Verdunoa hillside site known for its mineral-rich terroirthe 2018 Monvigliero is crafted with organic-minded minimal intervention. The vintage benefited from a cool, extended growing season, yielding a Nebbiolo of ethereal refinement balanced by depth.
“Here’s a new submission from Voerzio Martini. The 2018 Barolo Monvigliero is delicate and fine. This lean, garnet-colored Nebbiolo peels back in thin layers with wild cherry, rose, white pepper and dried violet. However, there is a special tightness and cohesiveness to those layers that bring on a deeper sense of complexity and depth. This is a great find from Verduno.” Robert Parker 94 Points
“A spicy red, exhibiting cherry, green olive, sandalwood, eucalyptus and tar aromas and flavors. Though complex and supple in texture, the pointed tannins put a grip on the finish. This is distinctive and refined, nevertheless, with energy and freshness. Best from 2025 through 2043. 100 cases made, 15 cases imported.” Wine Spectator 94 Points
Aroma & Flavor: The nose is refined, lifting rose petals, iris, and red fruit above the glass, with subtle notes of orange peel, spice, and crushed stone.
Palate: Gossamer in texture yet substantial in presencetannins drift away on the tongue as flavors of wild strawberry, pomegranate, and blood orange mingle with dried flowers, mint, and truffle.
More Notes: Some reviewers also detect mocha, scorched earth, sage, and baked plum beneath a tight structural core.
While decidedly built for contemplative sipping, this Barolo thrives with a slow decant and pairs beautifully with rich Italian fare: truffle pasta, osso buco, aged cheeses, or roasted lamb. Its a wine made for quiet appreciationnot casual drinking.
