Ardbeg An Oa is the most approachable expression in Ardbegs core range. It elegantly balances intense Islay peat smoke with creamy sweetness and spicethanks to its unique cask marriagemaking it a standout for both Ardbeg fans and newcomers seeking smoky refinement without extremes.
Launched in 2017, An Oa takes its name from the rugged Mull of Oa peninsula on Islay.
This non-age-statement whisky is matured in a blend of first-fill ex-bourbon, Pedro Ximnez (PX) sherry, and virgin charred oak casks. The components are united in Ardbegs bespoke French oak Gathering Vat for a smooth, integrated finish. Bottled at 46.6% ABV, unchill-filtered.
Intense, earthy peat opens with notes of burning applewood, charred oak, toffee, and aniseed.
Underlying layers of dried fruitssuch as fig, peach, and bananaand hints of seaweed or brine enhance coastal depth. A splash of water reveals vibrant lime, pine resin, and fennel.
The palate shows surprising savory-sweet interplay: pearl smoked tea, dark chocolate, and treacle toffee are set against medium-bodied peat smoke.
Bakery spice flirts with vanilla, nutmeg, and traces of grilled artichoke, while the mouthfeel remains rich but balanced.
The finish is long and lingering, weaving smoky black tea, peppered clove, cranberry tartness, and dry oak. Floral and mint-toffee undertones round out the experience without overpowering the palate.

“Ardbeg doles out occasional limited releases for their avid fans, but for nearly a decade the core range consisted of just three whiskies: 10 year old, Uigeadail, and Corryvreckan. The addition of An Oa, matured in a combination of virgin oak, Pedro Ximnez sherry, and bourbon barrels, and married in a French oak gathering vat prior to bottling, marks a reason to celebrate. An Oa is a more approachable Ardbeg. It lacks some of the typical oiliness, but flavor and complexity abound with hot peat, black tea, and peppery cloves. Die-hard Ardbeg fans should have no complaints, and new converts have a real treat in store. Gavin Smith”
As Ardbeg says it: “. . .a welcome new addition to the Ultimate range. Ardbeg An Oa is singularly rounded, due in no small part to time spent in our newly established bespoke oak Gathering Vat where whiskies from several cask types – including; sweet Pedro Ximenez; spicy virgin charred oak; and intense ex-bourbon casks, amongst others – familiarise themselves with each other. The result is a dram with smoky power, mellowed by a delectable, smooth sweetness. Hallmark Ardbeg peat, dark chocolate and aniseed are wrapped in smooth, silky butterscotch, black pepper and clove, before rising to an intense crescendo of flavour.”
