Ziereisen is located in the very southern part of Baden in a town called Efringen-Kirchen, directly on the Rhine river at the border of Alsace and Switzerland. Of course, Burgundy is the homeland of pinot noir, as well as pinots blanc and gris and chardonnay. Efringen-Kirchens climatic conditions, coupled with limestone soils, correspond to the conditions of Burgundy. The average temperature (52F) is similar to that of Burgundy. Chemical fertilizers and sprays are strictly avoided in the vineyard, though this estate is not certified organic.

This wine was spontaneously fermented and kept with the skins for 4 weeks, then matured for at 24 months in used wooden fudres on the yeast before it was bottled unfined and unfiltered.

A nose of dark cherry, cassis and cloves as well as herbs de Provence. It’s rather slender, cool and yet somehow still opulent on the palate, with aromas of blackberry, black cherry and honeysuckle. A wine with good tension, fine tannins and a slight extract sweetness which is accompanied by elegant minerality on the finish.
