Dewars Double Double 21-Year-Old emerges as an unexpectedly refined blended Scotchmatured through an intricate four-stage aging regimen and finished in Oloroso sherry casks. It offers sophisticated layers of dried fruit, honeyed nuts, and subtle oak spice. While some reviewers note a surprisingly brief finish, it delivers solid aged character at a modest price for its age
Part of Dewars premium Double Double Series, this whisky undergoes a four-stage maturation: separate aging of grain and malt whiskies blending further oak aging finishing in ex-Oloroso sherry casks. The result is a smoothly integrated 21-year expression. Bottled at 46% ABV, non-chill-filtered.
Creamy and nutty, with praline, honey, and tinned stone fruits like peaches and pineapple.
Subtle tobacco and dark tropical wood notes evolve with time in the glass, alongside hints of dried vine fruit and vanilla.
A velvety mouthfeel introduces fig compote, prunes, honey, and a touch of tannic oak spice.
Some reviewers detect lingering ethanol heat from the grain component, but malt and cocoa finally emerge.
The finish is moderate in lengthsweet but fading faster than expected. Expect traces of blackberries, honey, spices, and a dash of oak.
Some comment on a slightly thin texture or acrid character that limits the longevity.
“Saddle leather, golden berries, and tobacco are sturdy and stately aromas. The flavors open with velveteen honey, cigar smoke, and toasted grains. Undertones of brown butter and dried mango add depth and character to the smooth profile.” 96 Points 2021 Ultimate Spirits Challenge

“Master blender Stephanie Macleods innovative blend was inspired by Dewars famous double aging process. She separately blended parcels of aged malt and grain whisky, left each to marry, then blended them together to marry again, before finishing in oloroso sherry casks. A tantalizing nose of chocolate, caramel, vanilla, crystalized orange slice, fresh plum, black cherry, and moist coffee grounds. Smooth flavors of chocolate-dipped raspberries, gingersnaps, and bold sherry fruit yield to a finish of smoke and spice.”
