This expression ages for 2 years in American oak barrels, followed by a 4month finishing period in French oak barrels, producing a doublewood reposado. Made with 100% estate-grown Blue Weber agave and mineral-rich volcanic water. Its bottled at 42% ABV (84 proof).
The aroma opens with rich cooked agave, evolving into vanilla, caramel popcorn, and citrus peel. Floral honey and toasted oak emerge as it opens. Reviewers especially praise the beautiful, complex aroma with whisky-meets-tequila themes.
Medium-bodied and soothingly viscous, the palate delivers toasty oak spice, cooked agave, and baking spices (cinnamon, clove). Notes of salted caramel, black pepper, and herbal phenolics add structure and mouthfeel.
A long, warm finish layered with oak tannin, agave sweetness, and lingering pepper spice. Subtle herbal and smoky nuances carry through, echoing the whiskey influence behind the concept.
The Sassenach Select is the first collaboration between the award-winning El Tequileno and The Sassenach Spirits teams. Antonio Tony Salles met with Scottish actor and spirit aficionado Sam Heughan on several trips to Mexico. Creating this blend first began with us enjoying The Sassenach whisky, says Salles. Though literally a world apart, the two combined their cultures and shared passion for creating exceptional spirits to do this new blend justice.
To bring the expression to life, they started with an award-winning base. Learning about the process behind creating The Sassenach whisky, and hearing stories of Scotland has been an inspirational experience for me, Salles says. The Scottish and Mexican cultures have many similarities both have great pride in their countries, deep-rooted histories, and of course, a great passion for producing their national spirits. The Sassenach Select is handcrafted using the finest matured agave from the Highlands of Jalisco and mineral-rich water from El Volcan de Tequila and is distilled in traditional copper pot stills. It is aged for two years in American oak barrels and finished in French oak barrels. The result is an extraordinary blend of bold taste notes.
